Home Security System?
Ok so we are moving next month into a house that we will be renting. Unfortunately, ADT & Brinks dont let renters use their services…which is ok because we dont plan to rent the house forever, so their products would probably be a waste of money anyway.
Ive been online FOREVER it feels like, looking for a home security system we can install ourselves. Ive heard wireless is the easiest way to go? We just dont want to have to pay a professional to come out and do it. I have NO idea how to find what Im looking for or what products actually do what we want them to do. So Im hoping that maybe somebody can steer me in the right direction if I describe what I hope to find…..
Like I said, wireless would be great. I want something not too difficult to use….we would like to be able to monitor all the windows and doors in the house (there isnt very many). And MOST OF ALL, I want something LOUD. Id want the siren/alarm to be able to be heard from the next door neighbors houses….I figure, if the alarm isnt very loud, what good does it do? Im hoping that if (God forbid) anyone ever tried to break in, the alarm would scare them away if they know everyone can hear it and cops may very well be on their way….
I have a 4yr old son and I want to do anything I can to assure a sense of safety in our house.
Any info or help would be greatly appreciated. Does anybody know of a system that I should purchase?
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Have you tried Radio Shack? They have a wide range of monitors and detectors.
we have ADT and we’re home owners. however, i cannot recommend a company or service (sorry), but wanted to share a tip with you. you said the louder the better. this isn’t necessarily true because anyone and everyone could hear the alarm, but that doesn’t mean they will call the cops for you. you need a system that will automatically call the police and notify you if something is going on. for example, before my husband and i got married, and his roommate was in his room asleep while someone came to break in. the roommate didn’t hear a single thing going on and felt pretty stupid after what had happened.
anyway, i hope you find what you’re looking for!
My husband and I own a low voltage company and do this for a living. We deal with commercial, but the premise is the same.
There are a couple of options you have, but are very limited by the fact that you are renting. Your lease could prohibit it.
First, you could have a professional (security systems installer) look at what you want, there are several small shops that do the same thing but aren’t nationally known like the big boys. When searching in your area, you might find it in electrical systems, limited energy systems, or security systems. It would probably cost at least a k-buck for install.
Or, you could get a diy security system, but quality is not as good, but will last a couple of years. But in either case, you probably won’t get monitoring by an outside company like ADT or Brinks. In our area, some computer networking companies also do security systems, but mostly cameras and dvd file storage for retail.
Sounds awful, but truthfully (being in the business), I trust calling 911 more than a home security system. We’ve found that the police are slower on those calls due to false alarms and rarely do neighbors call the police for an alarm.
Nearly 3 years ago I had someone try to break into my apartment. It was in the evening and the lights were off, but I wasn’t asleep yet. I heard a noise at the back door. I ran into the living room and flipped on the outside lights. It startled the burgler and I saw him run off. . I then called several alarm companies in my city and they all gave installation and monitoring quotes. I recommend you call a local burglar alarm system installer to get your questions answered. http://www.homesecuritysystemratings.com Every alarm companies offer a free installation special, so inquire about that too.
